Hypnotherapist Marcella Hilfetry7th Path™ to the Rescue

by Marcella Hilferty, BCH, CPHI

The purpose of this article is to hopefully give those of you that thought you had the perfect client and then something shifts and that huge question mark pops up on the top of your head and you wonder what just happened? This article is to help you know that we were given many tools with our 5-PATH® AND 7 Path™ training and how in this case I was able to utilize to help a client that I was ready to refer out. Keep on reading and you will discover how the perfect client went to a “What the Heck” client.

CASE: 74-year old woman calls and wants to quit smoking. She quit smoking over 6 years ago, after smoking for a good 30 years and started again. She is only smoking about 6 or 7 cigarettes a day and has tried the patch and gum. These products made her sick but, it just seems she is unable to quit on her own like she did before. The many horrific commercials has scared her into wanting to quit, as well as a friend that ended up with COPD.

Response to Hypnosis - Client was extremely compliant and was able to quit after 2 sessions. However, during the 2nd session pre-hypnosis interview, she opens up about how she worries about everything and this is how she has been most of her life. Through continued conversation, she decides that she would like to rid herself of this worry and continue on with hypnosis.

Session Three: Client is able to go in to somnambulism very easily, however, Session 3 AR, she really struggled and I realized that the issues were deep routed and unable to recall memories. She became very confused and upset to the point of almost emerging herself out of hypnosis. To help center her, I chose to move in a different direction and ended the session with a post-hypnosis interview. It was discovered that she has struggled most of her life with retention of information, understanding directions, etc. Now remember, this is a client that was compliant and able to quit smoking within 2 sessions.

Strategy: I wanted to immediately get her started on 7th Path™. I explained how it worked but could tell from the blank expression on her face that she just shut down and probably was hearing blah, blah, blah. Remembering that Cal offers many wonderful tools, I felt I still had another way to reach her and help her, and directed her to Cal’s free videos on the 7th Path self-hypnosis® website http://www.7thpathselfhypnosis.com/.

Session Four: Client arrives with tears in her eyes and shares with me that she knows why she’s so upset. It appears she attached a friendship to our appointments because I helped her to quit smoking. Long story, somehow her stress and worries were my fault, were my fault from her point of view, because I didn’t respond to her in the way a “friend” should respond when she reached out to me to see how I was doing after eye surgery. This is a story in itself. At this point, I had to sit her down and have a discussion with her. I needed to be firm with her and explain that I am here to help her reach her goals. However, if I am a cause of her worries, I would gladly refer her out because I felt that I would not be doing her a service. She did not want to be referred out and asked if I would continue to work with her?

Next steps: I asked if she started on 7th Path self-hypnosis®. Getting all upset, she tells me she has not and had not watched the videos and thought it cost money, etc. (lots of excuses). I stopped the conversation and told her that I would not see her again unless she incorporates 7th Path™ into her daily practice.

Thank goodness for Cal’s free videos. I explained that she would have the opportunity to listen multiple times, as well as have Cal take her through the first recognition.

Session Five: Finally, after the third request to watch the free 7th Path™ videos, she finally complied and was extremely happy that she did. She enjoyed Cal leading her on the first recognition and found this very soothing.

Client testimony after proceeding with additional recognitions: “I am so happy with these recognitions. I no longer react to things the same way I used to. My daughter always tried to shelter me from bad news because of how I would overreact and get extremely stressed out. The other day my son-in-law told me of my granddaughter being in an auto accident and my first reaction was to ask if she was ok and I was told yes. From that point I just went on with my day. In the past, I would have gotten extremely excited, stressed out and carried on like the world was about to end. To my surprise, I didn’t even slightly react in the way I did in the past. I am very happy with this process.”

Conclusion:

“Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk” is very important for us as hypnotists. If we react in front of the client when they do something that “pushes our buttons”, we are not providing them a good service. Using the tools that we were given for ourselves, helps us to help our clients. Watch Hypnosis Training Video #535, as Cal and Erika point out how important this is.
